Edie Windsor
Plaintiff Edie Windsor, 84, who sued the federal government after the IRS denied her refund request for the $363,000 in federal estate taxes she paid after her spouse, Thea Spyer, died in 2009. When Edie found out her case had one – striking down the federal ban on same-sex marriage– she said, “I wanna go to Stonewall right now!”. She did and so did 1,000s of others.
